The History of Hemp

Hello!

My name is Hemp.

You Probably already know me, but I am sure you don’t really know me…

I mean, do you REALLY know me?

So, let’s start.. as I said before my name is Hemp

I come from a large and old family called Cannabis Sativa

And I guess some of you know my cousin very well..which some say is problematic cousin ..

well i think he is just a happy fellow

Okay..

3-4 months is all the time I need to grow..

You don’t need to spray me with pesticides and G.M.O, oh no no no

And you guys can produce more than a thousand different products from me ,

things like: rope, clothes ,textile ,food ,paper ,bio-fuel , bio plastic and many more

My seeds have everything that your body needs :

Made up of :5% water, 5% carbohydrates, 49% total fat and 31% protein.

100 grams of my seeds supplies 586 calories….which is 64% of the Daily Value

My seeds are also a rich source of B vitamins, and dietary minerals; manganese , phosphorus, magnesium ,

zinc , iron and dietary fiber.

Approximately 73% of the energy in my seeds is in the form of fats and essential fatty acids,

Mainly …omega-3 fatty acids ,omega-6 fatty acid,omega-9 fatty acid,

All of that is just in my seeds…..Amazing isn’t it?

Did you know that you guys used my fibers for textile long long long time ago (8000 BC in china)

The Chinese back then called my family imperior plant “dàmá 大麻” (if someone wants to make a cool

chinese tattoo)..

And they used me to make clothes, shoes, ropes, and an early forms of paper, but they also discovered the

medical uses..of all the members of my family.

Almost at the same time but in a different place the ancient Egyptians used me and my cousin

for textile and medical uses.

Also the Ancient Greeks used me and in the late medieval times in Germany and Italy I was

employed..cooked in dishes, as a filling in pies and tarts, or boiled in a soup.

What can I tell you…my family and I..WE were famous… if WE didn’t grow in your area you would cultivate

us…

I even carried Columbus to the new world .. Okay, not me..But the sails and the ropes of the ships where

made from my fiber.

I’ll let you in on a little secret. The original United States Declaration of Independence

was written on hemp paper

And the first flag was made out of hemp fabric.

The first dollar bills were also printed on hemp paper.

George Washington was a gooooood friend .. yes yes .. that George who was proclaimed first President of

the United States

He pushed for the growth of hemp and even grew it himself, as I was a cash crop I was commonly being used

to make rope and fabric..like my brother from india.

in George’s words:

“Make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed .The Hemp may be sown any where.”

– George Washington, U.S. President

But George was not the only American president that liked to see me grow.

The list includes:

Thomas Jefferson: “Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country.”

– Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President.

Other’s include: James Madison, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, Zachary Taylor, and Franklin Pierce.

Even Henry Ford loved me..and we all know he didn’t love everyone..this is what he had to say about me :

“Why use up the forests which were centuries in the making and the mines which required ages to lay down, if we can get the

equivalent of forest and mineral products in the annual growth of the hemp fields?”

– Henry Ford

And Ford made the first hemp car..and it was running on hemp fuel.

Okay I don’t care if you twist and change me to bio-plastic or bio-fuel, if its to help this little planet.

Today if you are driving a BMW, Ford, GM, Chrysler, Honda, Iveco, Lotus, Mercedes, Mitsubishi,

Volkswagen , Audi or Volvo..be sure there are a few parts that are made out of me..

Like the interior of a car door or a glove box.

You can even build with me..

The first example of the use of hempcrete was in 1986 in France.

In the UK hemp lime was first used in 2000 for the construction of two test dwellings.

The first US home made of hemp-based materials was completed in August 2010 in Asheville, North Carolina

And for the grand finale…

From my flowers you can isolate at least 113 different cannabinoids

A cannabinoid is one of a class of diverse chemical compounds that acts on cannabinoid receptors in cells

that alter neurotransmitter release in the brain

The most notable cannabinoid is : Cannabidiol (CBD) …its considered to have a wide scope of potential

medical applications

The second cannabinoid is : tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) its the principal psychoactive cannabinoid of

cannabis

I am the one who has a lower concentration of THC and a higher concentration of CBD, which decreases or

eliminates its psychoactive effects.

And my cousin the funny one has the high concentration of THC…

This is what makes him the happy fellow of our family.

So This is Me.

Exactly How Nature Intended Me To Be….
